Recently I’ve been trying to slow down on my book buying addiction because it’s getting out of hand and as a student, I have really modest incomes and need to use my money for “more important things” (even though we all know how important books are). I realized that I was unable to go on a book buying ban for more than 3 weeks/1 month so I made a compromise with myself : I’ll just start buying more books that were previously owned. I decided I would write 3 good reasons to get second-hand books and a 3 steps guide to make sure you have the best experience with them !
REASON Nº1 : YOU ARE SAVING MONEY
Books can often get pretty expensive, especially when they’re hardback but not everyone can buy new books and the library doesn’t always have the books you want or maybe you just like to own books rather than just borrow them (in case you like to highlight or reread or o whatever readers do with their owned books) so this is a good compromise. Indeed, a second-hand book, unless it’s a very special edition, will always be less expensive than getting a new one at the store. Even if you can afford new books, you can still save money for other things. Also, the least expensive your books are, the more you can buy !
REASON Nº2 : YOU CAN FIND RARE/LIMITED EDITIONS
Have you ever wanted this limited edition of a book but came too late and didn’t catch it ?Have you ever wanted this 1975 edition but no bookstore has it ? THIS IS YOUR CHANCE !
these are french classics in gorgeous leather-bound edition that I got for 3 euros ! can you believe it ?
REASON Nº3 : THE SMELL AND THE LOOK
Don’t you like the smell of the yellowish page of a book or a vintage-looking leather-bound old book ? This book has travelled through time and you can give it a second-life. And if like me, you like vintage as much as new, just think that if you save money by getting second-hand books more often, you’ll have more money to get brand new releases.
Buying second-hand books can have its perks but it can also turn into a bad experience if you happen to receive a completely destroyed book, which is not what we want here. So here are a few tips to get the best used books out there.
1 – FIND A BOOKSTORE THAT SELLS USED BOOKS
If you go to the store and see the books, you can check their conditions for yourself. Don’t forget to watch the inside too : sometimes the cover and spine can be in perfect condition but certain pages can be missing or totally wrecked.
2 – GO TO A FLEA MARKET
Same reasons that the bookstore but you can find even cheaper books and rarer editions !
3 – READ / WATCH REVIEWS :
If you want to order the used books online, there are no ways you can check the condition of your copy before-hand. The best way to know which seller to go to is to read or watch booktubers / book bloggers reviews and try to pick the store that has the best ones. Also, you could try to pick a seller that accepts returns : that way, if you’re not satisfied you can always send it back.
That’s it for this week’s post !
Thank you for reading I hope it was useful and you enjoyed it.
